Materials & Construction:

  • Made primarily from goat‑hair (羊毫, “yang hao”) bristles: goat hair offers a softer, more absorbent, more “round and full” tip compared to stiffer hair types such as wolf‑hair (狼毫).

  • The shaft is typically made from bamboo (or other natural material) with a well‑balanced weight and grip. The brush tip (“毛”/“毫”) is carefully tied and shaped by hand, giving a good “pen‑belly” (笔肚) for holding and releasing ink.

When & How to Use It:

  • Ideal for larger sheet sizes or when you want a more expressive, fluid style: landscapes, ink wash, large characters, decorative panels.

  • Great when you want to emphasise rich ink tones, dynamic shading, or soft transitions rather than ultra‑crisp strokes.

  • Because it holds more ink, you’ll want to monitor the ink flow: too much can lead to pooling or loss of sharpness in detail — so practice your rhythm of loading, control of ink, and brush posture.

Care & maintenance: Because goat‑hair is softer, it can splay or weaken if not cleaned properly. After use, rinse gently in clean water, reshape the tip, let it dry vertically or horizontally safe from deforming the hairs; avoid harsh chemicals or leaving ink drying in the brush as that can “kill” the softness.
