About
About This Class If the oriental brush painting is a unique and shining crown, then the landscape painting is the jewel on this crown. The Chinese term for “landscape” is made up of two characters meaning “mountains and water.” It is linked with the philosophy of Daoism, which emphasises harmony with the natural world. Viewing oriental landscape paintings, it is clear that the oriental depictions of nature are seldom mere representations of the external world. Rather, they are expressions of the mind and heart of the individual viewers—cultivated landscapes that embody the culture and cultivation of their masters. This class is a self paced learning journey with life long access. During this workshop, you will learn: the brush strokes and techniques of painting rocks and mountains; the process of how to outline a rock, create texture, reinforce the perspective and render the object; how to paint trees with a particular brush technique; how to create mountains in close distance and far away; how to paint water; how to paint objects in the distance, for example people on a boat. This four-section course provides a step-by-step guide to the traditional art of oriental landscape painting. You will learn the fundamental techniques of Sumie, focusing on the relationship between ink, brush, and rice paper. The lessons guide you through painting mountains, water, and atmospheric mist, emphasizing the meditative rhythm of the brush. By following the structured lectures and demonstrations, you will develop the skill to compose a full landscape. The program concludes with a practical session where you apply your knowledge to create a final piece on rice paper. The Art of Mindfulness and Meditation This workshop will start with some simple body movement and breathing exercises to help us relax our body and mind.
