It is an unprocessed, unsized Xuan paper with good absorbency and softness, making it ideal for ink painting. Interestingly, instead of aging and looking worse as time passes, this paper loses its original roughness as it gets older. Here at the Asian Brushpainter, we recommend our customers stock up on some Versatile paper to use later, after it becomes smoother and easier to work with as well as more visually appealing - than it is in its original form.
This paper is particularly suited for drawing and painting fine lines. This makes this paper perfect for Gongbi painting and calligraphy. A paper becomes processed by undergoing an additional step after the normal manufacturing process for unprocessed Xuan paper. The additional step consists of spreading the chemical substance alum on the paper to decrease the absorbency of the paper. Since this paper is processed of alum is applied to take away most of the absorbency.
The amount of water that can still be absorbed by the paper depends upon how much alum is applied. This paper has an intermediate absorbency, which also makes it great for Ink Painting and East Asian Calligraphy,
